The In-Betweens (poem, 2019)

(c) Kelsey Kautzsch

I'm learning to cherish the in-betweens,
The days that warm your bones from winter,
Though it isn't yet summer
The late afternoon and early evening,
When the sun has not yet begun to set
The freedom and purity at the end of childhood
Before the burden and reality of adulthood
There are times when
The in-betweens seem to make up your whole life
When you are wanting but never satisfied,
Searching but never finding.
Waiting, waiting, waiting.

I want to enjoy the in-betweens
The now, the present, the here
I want to frolic in the breeze of mid-spring
To smile in the dim light of dusk
Yet here I am
Waiting
